Biological Engineering

Is it is related to Biology Field?

Yes!

If you have interest in biology then, it is one of the best career option for you.

Like chemical engineering is based on chemistry, electrical engineering is based on electricity, Mechanical engineering on mechanics, same way biological engineering has the liaison with the biological sciences.

Biological Engineers have any connection with doctors or therapists?

Yes!

In simple words,

“Biological Engineering (bio-engineering) is the discipline of engineering courses that uses the concepts, principles of biology and tools of engineering to create usable, tangible, economically viable products that meets the human needs in a cost-effective way”.

Use of Biological Engineering in Daily Life

Biological engineers designs the medical devices used by the doctors, the devices that tests the blood sugar. Also, design the processes that cleans the water. The jobs of biological engineer include developing biological sensors to minimize stress or enhance productivity, resolving waste management, and developing biodegradable products.

Is Biological Engineering and Biomedical Engineering are same or there is any difference?

Both the terms are different. There is a slight difference between both the terms.

Biomedical engineers applies biological and other sciences to medical innovations whereas biological engineers applies the principles of engineering to biology not specifically for medical uses.

biological engineering

Biological engineers uses the principles of biology and the tools of engineering to create a functional product in a cost-effective way.

Biological engineering includes knowledge from a applied sciences such as mass and heat transfer, kinetics, biocatalysts, biomechanics, bioinformatics, separation and purification processes, bioreactor design, surface science, polymer science, fluid mechanics and thermodynamics.

Engineered Biological systems have been used to construct materials, process chemicals, produce energy, provide food, and help maintain or enhance human health.

Qualities Required in Biological Engineer

The skills required in the biological engineer include knowledge in the basic sciences: Physics, Chemistry and Biology. One must have the interest in areas of improving health for humans and animals and have the capability to resolve problems like waste management, water pollution, and waste reduction.

Duties of Biological Engineer

The job responsibilities of a biological engineer is diverse. A biological engineer performs the following tasks:

  • Design equipment and devices for diagnosing medical problems.
  • Provide support for biomedical equipment.
  • Ensure safety and effectiveness of biomedical equipment.
  • They may also work with life scientists and medical scientists to perform research.
  • Based on the research, they prepare procedures, write technical reports and publish research papers.

Along with scientific expertise, one must have the technical skills to become the biological engineer.

Admission

Desiring candidates can take admission in B.Tech/B.E. programme through entrance test. JEE Main is the all India level entrance exam that acts as a gateway for admission to the first year undergraduate engineering courses. Besides this, there are many state/University level entrance exam like CUET 2024 that offers admission to engineering courses.

Candidates holding bachelor’s degree can apply for master’s courses in biological engineering. The admissions in M.Tech courses is done through GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering). The entrance test of GATE is conducted in the month of February. Some states/institutions also regulates its own separate test to grant admission in PG courses.

Career Prospects

Many job opportunities are available for biological engineers. As compared to other occupations and professions, the job rate for the biological engineers is increasing rapidly. The biological engineers are also involved in research, management, sales or production.

With the bachelor’s degree in biological engineering, one can enter in this profession as a biological engineer, biological technician or in other related job profiles.
