Government College of Engineering is a non-minority and co-educational college was established during the third five-year plan in the year 1966 as a third engineering college in Tamil Nadu. College is affiliated to Anna University and approved by AICTE- All India Council of Technical Education.

Government College of Engineering is situated in 162 hectares of land surrounded by hills at NH-7 (Bangalore highway), Omalur in Salem district of Tamil Nadu. College is well-connected by roads from all major cities of the country.

Government College of Engineering conducts 6 under graduate (regular), 4 under graduate (part-time), 5 post-graduate, 2 M.S (by research) and 5 doctoral degree courses in the field of engineering and technology.
